Monroe piercing is a piercing that is attached above the upper lip. The name is derived from Marilyn Monroe’s famous beauty mark, even if it was actually on the cheek and not the lip. Accordingly, such an upper lip piercing is only correctly called a Monroe if it is on the left half of the face. On the other hand, it is on the right side. The piercing is analogously called Madonna Piercing, which has a beauty mark on its right side.
Other names for this type of piercing are crayfish, angel bites, labret piercing or anti bites.
Stinging a Monroe Piercing
After the usual disinfection of the area to be pierced, the hole is pierced with the help of clamping pliers and a needle. It should be noted that depending on whether a ring or a plug is worn as an initial piece of jewellery, the piercing canal develops and heals at a certain angle after the piercing.
It is possible to change the type of jewellery afterwards, but there is a specific reduction in comfort.
Risks with a Monroe piercing
In addition to the general risks of Monroe piercings – such as the possibility of inflammation – there are a few minor things to mention about a Monroe. Lip plugs like the Monroe tend to damage the gums and tooth enamel. However, since pins made of PTFE have existed, these impairments have been almost completely ruled out. Even when wearing braces, there is a risk with every lip piercing that the piercing can catch in the braces. If there is a need to shave the pierced area, it could cause inflammation.
In this case, it is recommended to remove the piercing before shaving.
Which is the right jewellery?
A barbell with a flat ball at the end is usually worn as jewellery for a Monroe piercing. The diameter of the pen is usually 1.4-1.8 mm. Very rarely is a piercing worn with a ring. Occasionally, cells with protruding tips are also preferred.
What does a Monroe piercing cost?
Is one of the cheapest piercing variants available. Such a piercing can be purchased at a price of around 40 euros. Of course, this price varies depending on the region. In rare cases, the cost can be up to an upper limit of about 90 euros.
Pain with a Monroe Piercing?
The stinging of a Monroe piercing is considered relatively painless. This is because the tissue of the upper lip is rather thin and has only a few nerves. Some people also have a thicker and firmer layer of skin in this area. In these cases, it is expected that the piercing of a Monroe piercing can be a bit more painful. On the 10-part pain scale, the Monroe Piercing receives 3/10.
Monroe piercing is essential to ensure excellent and correct care and regular cleaning during the healing process. Bacteria can quickly get into the open wound, mainly due to the proximity to the mouth. Should the piercing hole become infected, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ointments and lotions should be used to contain the inflammation. If this does not work after a few days, the piercer should be contacted to clarify whether it is necessary to remove the piercing.
